The DSD family united to welcome the new Grade 1’s in style on Wednesday, 20 January. The first day of “big” school is traditionally celebrated as a special occasion at the Deutsche Schule Durban. The DSD recognizes that this day marks the commencement of a new chapter in the lives of the children and their families. Parents and Grandparents attended a celebratory assembly.
The principal and a Member of the DSD Board held welcoming speeches and the DSD school choir impressed everyone with a most beautiful performance of “Jubulani Africa”. Each Grade 1 child was then personally introduced and welcomed. The charm of this unique school family was especially evident in the “Taubenhaus” song whereby the Grade 2’s and 3’s incorporated the new Grade 1’s in their song and dance.
The fact that each new Grade 1 pupil clutched the traditional “Zuckertüte”, containing sweets and other lovely goodies to sweeten up their 1st day of school, added a specifically German flavour to the festivities.
