Einschulung
The first day of ‘big school’ is celebrated in the German tradition with the Grade 1 children bringing their Zuckertüte to school. A Zuckertüte is a big cardboard cone, prettily decorated and filled with chocolate, sweets, toys and all the school supplies they will need, to help “sweeten” the first day at school.
The whole school welcomes the new Grade 1’s with special songs and dancing and each Grade 1 pupil is introduced to their buddy from Grade 7.
After welcoming the new Grade 1s into the DSD family, the children return to their new classroom to open their Zuckertüte! Parents are invited to share this special time and enjoy some morning coffee before leaving the kids to enjoy the rest of their day.
Fasching
The most colourful day of the year. The learners dress up and spread the carnival cheer. Fasching is a carnival day, on which the learners dress up and spread the carnival cheer. The learners and some brave adults gather in the school hall to celebrate. After the usual parade, during which each learner introduces their costume, the parents leave and the fun at school continues with dancing, playing games and eating pancakes.
Music Evening
Twice a year our budding musicians have an opportunity to perform their individual music pieces in front of an audience. A large number of learners take advantage of this opportunity to impress the listeners present on the night.
Prizegiving
The school’s prize-giving ceremony for Grades 1 – 7 takes place during the last week of the school year. Certificates and prizes are awarded to pupils for outstanding achievements. Parents, grandparents and friends are invited to attend.
Kindergarten Christmas Play
Every year, the Kindergarten puts on a very special performance to celebrate Christmas. Parents, grandparents and friends are invited to attend and be impressed by the confidence and progress of the development of the German ability of these younger members of our school community.
Art Auction
This biannual event showcases the tremendous talent of our learners, as well as our staff. Every class completes an artwork that is available for auction on the night. Snacks and drinks are made available while spirited banter and cheerful comradery fill the room. This evening is a great night out for our parents, as well as an important fundraiser for our school.
