FASCHING – CARNIVAL

On Tuesday the Deutsche Schule Durban was filled with excited children in imaginative costumes. We all had a wonderful morning watching the children parade through the hall, eating pancakes and playing games.

SWIMMING GALA

Last Friday we had our annual DSD Swimming Gala and it was once again a great success, this time fortunately without too much rain. The children had great fun cheering on their respective house and performed impressively.

The DSD at the DSD

Last year the Deutsche Schule Durban organised the exams for the ‘Deutsche Sprachdiplom II’ (DSD II) for the first time and those for the DSD I for the second time. We are very proud of our learners, almost all of whom passed!

We had a small ceremony to hand out the certificates and to express our admiration for the effort put into the German classes by our learners and their parents. Every Monday evening High School students (mostly DSD alumni) gather at the DSD to continue German SAL as an extra subject up to matric. From now on, the grade 8 learners will write the DSD I and the grade 11s the DSD II.

The ‘Deutsche Sprachdiplom’ (or German Language Certificate) is an official proof of German language proficiency, is organised and recognised by the Federal Republic of Germany and is extremely valuable for our learners for future studies, scholarship and job applications in a German speaking country as well as in South Africa.

IQAA Certificate

Our IQAA Certificate has arrived! We are very proud that our school passed this evaluation with flying colours.

#DSDGolfDay2016

dsdgolfday2016-21#DSDGolfDay201
The weather also played its part last Friday, when the #DSDGolfDay2016 kicked-off at 09h30 at the Kloof Country Club. 88 Golfers and a host of DSD Helpers stood ready to embark on a day of golfing fun. Every hole was host to a new experience for the golfers as they played their way through the beautiful Kloof course. At 18h00 the prize giving started, where every golfer could not only receive a prize, but also watch our children perform a song and dance. We would like to congratulate the winners of the day: Tyrone Davisworth and Richard Grace. We would also like to thank our many sponsors and helpers-without you, this day would not have been the success it was!

Inter-House Athletics

In spite of a rather gloomy day when compared to the other beautiful spring days we have recently enjoyed, our inter-house athletics meeting was held in good spirits on Friday 26 August.  The field events were concluded during the course of the week and then teams Max and Moritz took to the track to battle it out for the coveted inter-house athletics trophy.  Moritz clinched the gala earlier in the year and so team Max had a point to prove, which they did by winning the event by 231 points to 195.  In the process 11 records were broken and one was equalled. Congratulations to all our children who participated and supported their house so enthusiastically.

We were also pleased to host Mr Charles Liasides, his sister Frederike and their aunt at our athletics meeting to officially open the new grandstand that the Liasides family had generously funded in honour of their late mother who had taught at the DSD many years before.  The new grandstand was packed with parents and supporters and has certainly proved to be a wonderful addition to the school’s infrastructure. We are grateful to the Liasides family for their generous contribution to the school and to the Mower family who donated once again balloons for the event.

Donuts for Dad

Today the Kindergarten children had very special visitors. The Dads were invited for a morning of music, games, lots of fun, and of course donuts. Many thanks to the parent committee for organising this wonderful event!

Musik & Laternenfest 2016

In its first year with a new name, the “Musik und Laternenfest” was a great success. Friends and families of the DSD Community and beyond gathered on the school’s field to enjoy a day filled with music, food, dance and fun in the sun. A variety of bands filled the line-up, some of them returning from the last years, such as “Zisamo” and “Unpluck’d” while many others, namely “The South Jersey Pom Pom’s” and “Generic”, graced the DSD stage for the first time. A very special surprise act was classically trained Soprano from Ireland, Megan Ruby Walsh, who surprised the audience with a classic German “Lied” and an Irish folk song. Plenty of food was available, ranging from pancakes to goulash soup and drinks such as Kiddies Glühwein as well as a flea market stall that sold all kinds of fun goodies. The children also had plenty to keep them busy, with activities such as a colouring-in station, face-paint and the German classic “Flaschenziehen”. The field was a colourful array of people, pic-nic blankets, camping chairs, adults singing and kids dancing. Everyone agrees: We can’t wait to do this again next year!

Musik und Laternenfest- It’s almost here!
